VIDUSHI
Drishtikona - Changing Perspectives presents 'VIDUSHI' Workshop Series
Feminine form of 'Wise' or 'Learned' in Sanskrit, 'Vidushi' is our attempt to bridge the gender gap in STEM fields by focusing on basic skill enhancement in girls of all ages. Research has shown that globally, in terms of learning outcomes for Basic Mathematical Skills, girls fare much poorly as compared to boys of the same age. This is due to the fact that in the patriarchal universe, the study of Science and Mathematics is often seen as "men's work" and women are consistently discouraged from pursuing these academic and career paths. Another reason for girls scoring poor in Mathematics as compared to other subjects is the inherently patriarchal teaching of Mathematics and Science, which is centered around being unnecessarily harsh and even violent as a teacher and treating these subjects with a haughty air of importance.
Through our long-term program 'Vidushi' we aim to educate girls in Basic Mathematical Skills through a well-curated and thoroughly researched education system in sync with NCERT which is sensitive to the needs of the students. We follow a non-judgmental approach to teaching Mathematics wherein students are not shamed for being incorrect or imprecise, as in traditional forms of teaching. The focus is on improvement-oriented learning through self-motivation with the ultimate aim of bridging the gap in Mathematical learning outcomes and gender representation in STEM fields.
